Hair coloring

The main reasons women color their hair are:

  • Covering (incipient) gray hair.
  • Creating a new look.
Nowadays it is common for women to color their hair themselves. However, the hairdresser can color the hair in ways that one cannot do with oneself. This concerns, for example, low-lights or high-lights. This is specialist work and is best done by the hairdresser. When coloring or dyeing the hair, a distinction is made between 3 types of products, these are temporary coloring, semi-permanent coloring and permanent coloring.
  • With a temporary coloring, the paint will have disappeared from the hair after about 6 to 8 washes. This way of coloring hair is mainly used to darken hair. This way of coloring will not be used to lighten the hair color because there is no hydrogen peroxide in the products used for this. The advantage of this temporary coloring is that no outgrowth occurs, because the paint is slowly washed out.
  • With a semi-permanent coloring, the hair will remain in it for about 8 to 12 washes. This way of coloring is mainly used to cover or camouflage the first gray hair or to use a color similar to one’s own hair. With this way of coloring, the hair cannot be made lighter, just like with a temporary coloring.
  • With a permanent color, the new color must grow out of the hair. With permanent coloring there is therefore a question of outgrowth, if this outgrowth is not regularly updated. A permanent hair coloring can make your hair lighter, in contrast to the temporary coloring and semi-permanent coloring. This way of coloring is also often used to camouflage gray hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Certain questions about dyeing hair come up regularly. Below you will find an overview of the most frequently asked questions. The questions have short and concise answers.
Hair dye has not always had an equally good image. Chemicals that were in the products also contributed to this. Modern hair dyes have to meet strict EU guidelines. This means that the ingredients should not be carcinogenic. The percentage of hydrogen peroxide does not normally harm your health either. It is possible that you are allergic to an ingredient.
The main difference between temporary and permanent hair coloring is the time that the color is visible and lasts. For example, choose a temporary color if you want to temporarily intensify your hair color. A completely different color can be done with permanent hair coloring.
When in doubt between two colors, it is sometimes easier to choose the light color. You can usually go from light to dark later on more easily than the other way around.
For optimal color retention and shiny hair, hair care products for colored hair can offer a solution. If you have had your hair dyed at the hairdresser, they will often recommend a shampoo and conditioner that will keep your hair color beautiful for a long time. Have you colored your hair yourself? Often the packaging of the product you have used will tell you how best to care for your hair after coloring. Colors that have faded can sometimes be refreshed with a color shampoo.
After the maximum exposure time, it is important that you rinse the product thoroughly. Your hair should be rinsed until there are no more dye residues. Hair coloring usually also includes a conditioner. Apply it after the treatment. The conditioner ensures that by closing the hair cuticles, the paint cannot release. Your dyed hair is nourished and protected with the conditioner.
This depends on the type of product used. If your hair is colored with a color rinse that fades with washing, you can reuse this product sooner than if your hair has been dyed permanently. It is recommended to wait at least 3 to 4 months between permanent paint treatments. Professional hair color products mention this in the instructions for use.
100% gray coverage is not always achievable. Often it is only the permanent hair colors that actually provide 100% gray coverage. You can have your gray hair colored at the hairdresser or you can do it yourself after advice from your hairdresser. Always pay close attention to the instructions on the packaging.
Green hair can occur both when bleaching and when dyeing your hair brown. This is often the result of an incorrect ratio of the paint and the care products. Also the choice of hair color or dye used can cause green hair. You can start treating the green hair yourself, or you can go to your hairdresser for professional care. Bleaching the hair can help remove the green. After that you can still choose a different hair color.
Your hair deserves a loving treatment. If you color your hair yourself, always do this according to the instructions for use. Do not let the product act for longer than indicated. Extending the exposure time is often useless, because the color pigments present will then not work better. If you rinse the coloring out of the hair earlier than the minimum processing time, the color pigments do not get enough chance to develop, so that the result is disappointing.
Be careful with the hair dyes and hair colors you use. Use one package at the same time and do not mix different brands and/or colors. Each packaging has a certain proportion and has been developed in such a way that the color is optimal. It cannot be said in advance which color you will create by mixing products. In addition, this does not benefit the condition of your hair.
If you are familiar with allergic reactions to, among other things, dyes, always test what happens before using a new product. You can do this by applying a little hair dye to the inside of your arm after cleaning. Let the hair dye sit for 24 to 48 hours. If nothing happens and you do not experience itching or discoloration of the skin, you can safely use the product to dye your hair.
Camouflaging your gray hair is no different than coloring or dyeing it. You do not have to do this directly with a large color difference. Start with a so-called color rinse. The color you bring into the hair with this will disappear after a few washes. Do you like the color? Then you can opt for a hair coloring or permanent paint.
Dyeing or coloring your hair during pregnancy is usually not dangerous. It is recommended to do a susceptibility test 24 to 48 hours in advance. Your body may react differently during pregnancy than you are used to. Not sure? Then ask your doctor for information or advice. Always read the package leaflet of the hair dye, to be sure whether the product can be used during pregnancy.
